Athens residents are currently welcomed to come see the new baby sea turtle on display at the Sandy Creek Nature Center. Rescued off Jekyll Island, the 7-month old loggerhead turtle will be fostered at the nature center until it is big enough to be released back into the wild. The turtle remains unnamed in hopes of dissuading the adoption of wild animals as pets, as is customary of all the displayed animals at the center. Sandy Creek has been fostering the turtle since September but had to postpone its exhibition due to medical concerns. This particular foster is part of a state-run turtle rehab program. Loggerhead turtles are common to Georgia coastlines and are the largest hard-shelled turtles in the world, but they are also endangered or threatened. The Sandy Creek Nature Center hopes that in displaying this new rescue, it can raise awareness of the dangers these turtles face.
