The Clarke County School District Board of Education announced Thursday that Xernona Thomas will be the district’s next superintendent.

After more than a year of disputes among community and district leaders, the Clarke County School District Board of Education now faces a massive test with implications for the district’s reputation and students: the accreditation agency is coming.

Accreditation agency Cognia, formerly AdvancED and Measured Progress, will investigate potential standard violations filed against members of the board by outgoing Superintendent Demond Means on Jan. 26-28.

Clarke County School District Superintendent Demond Means “remains under contract and continues to carry out his duties,” according to a Nov. 22 CCSD press release.

Clarke County School District opened a permanent job posting for the principal of Cedar Shoals High School on Oct. 23, according to a CCSD news release. Last week, Derrick Maxwell announced he is resigning from the position effective Oct. 29.

The CCSD Board of Education approved a plan to renovate the community garden and farmers market at the historic West Broad Street School property to a multi-use early learning facility.
