The University of Georgia School of Public and International Affairs has named Matthew Auer as its new dean. Auer will begin serving as SPIA's dean on July 1.
Currently, Auer is an environmental studies professor as well as vice president of academic affairs and dean of faculty at Bates College in Maine.
“Dr. Auer is committed to creating extraordinary learning experiences for students while also advancing scholarship and service that has a national and international impact,” said Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Pamela Whitten in a UGA press release.
Auer came to campus Jan. 5 to be interviewed for the position. Auer has received degrees from Harvard, Yale, and Tufts universities.
“[I am] somebody who loves educations at the broadest level...my instincts are that of a teacher, I love working with students,” Auer said while at UGA in January.
Auer hopes to accomplish further integration of SPIA majors as “one school," a more diverse faculty through international recruitment and broader support for graduate students.
