If you’re still in Athens this summer, chances are you still have your schedule full with summer jobs, internships and/or classes. However, The Red & Black is here to solve your summertime woes by bringing you the coolest spots (literally and figuratively) on campus and in Athens and get the scoop straight from who knows the university and Athens best, students.
TYLER CLINEBELL: Graduate student in the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication
“Hanging out by the fountain near Gilbert hall for sure is the best place to stay cool when you can’t leave campus. Also, the dining halls at Bolton have good outdoor seating that allows you to enjoy the warm weather without suffering from the heat.”
ALI TERRELL: Graduate student in the College of Veterinary Medicine
“I love taking my Golden Retriever, Birdi, to swim at Lake Herrick. They have several docks that are nice for hanging a hammock or dropping a fishing line too.”
STEPHANIE DIXON: Sophomore intended public relations major
Dixon enjoys hanging out at Menchie's Frozen Yogurt with friends.
“The atmosphere is so cool there. Plus, they have both indoor and outdoor seating so you can choose where is best based on the time of day you go there”.
ALLIE VLK: Sophomore intended public relations major
“You definitely should go kayaking down the Oconee River and get dumped out of your kayak by your friends. It doesn’t get any cooler than that”.
JENNY JONES: Graduate student in the College of Veterinary Medicine
“When I get a break from my clinical rotations, I enjoy spending time at the pool with my friends and classmates.”
KIRSTEN McCANN: senior advertising major
Another way to satisfy the need for thrill while you chill is to search out the famous Redneck Beach.
McCann said, “[It] has a waterfall and swimming hole area that is a great place to hang out with friends while enjoying a six pack or two.”
Right across from Athens Ridge, behind a run-down gas station, there is a trail that will lead you to the best kept secret in Athens.
BRIAN MAXWELL: Graduate student in the College of Veterinary Medicine
“If there is a break long enough, kayaking down the Broad River is always fun. Especially with a cooler full of adult beverages to stay cool.”
Maxwell recommended the UGA Creamery, located off of East Green Street, as “a place to get out of the heat and enjoy an ice cream.”
